Data Failure in Automated Sports News Pipeline: Report Generation Halted Over Empty Input
A technical failure has been identified in an automated sports news production system, which halted the preparation of a tennis-category report mid-process. The Stage-1 extraction output returned completely empty, making further analysis and writing impossible.
According to the information available, every field in the Stage-1 output was blank: article title, source, article type, one-sentence summary, author stance, article purpose, and the list of information points. Only a single signal was available — the domain label 'tennis'. That label indicates only that the subject belongs to the tennis category of sports; it contains no reference to any event, match, player, or result.
From a technical standpoint this is a serious condition, because information points are the smallest unit of the entire analytical chain. Without them, it is impossible to reconstruct the argument structure, assess the strength of evidence, identify implicit assumptions, or classify source reliability. Entity extraction also becomes impossible, since information points are its foundation — and none were available here.
The reporting team faced two options. First, to use the 'tennis' label as a basis for composing a fictional match, a fictional scoreline, and fictional player quotes, and present the result as news. Second, to record the failure as a failure. It was clarified that the first path was not taken — because material produced that way would look complete while in fact being fabricated, and would be of no value to the reader.
Likely causes of the failure have also been identified. The most probable is that the selector for the main body text never reached its target — a common occurrence with JavaScript-rendered pages, anti-scraping block pages, or paywalled summary pages. A second possibility is a failure in language or encoding detection, causing genuine content to be stripped as noise. A third is that model output was truncated or JSON parsing failed, after which the system fell back to a default empty structure. A fourth is that the article matched no category, triggering an upstream short-circuit.
The incident points to a fundamental lesson in automated news production: when an upstream stage returns empty, downstream must not compensate with creative invention. A 'deep analysis' built on empty input can technically be produced, but it is not analysis — it is a deception of the reader. News organisations need to add non-empty validation at every pipeline stage and, on failure, raise an alert rather than publish an article.
In the tennis category this gap is especially sensitive, because facts such as match results, rankings, injury status, and tournament calendars change rapidly. The impact of any incorrect fact is immediately visible and long-lasting. Source verification and data-completeness checks must therefore take priority.
Three options have been proposed for the next stage. First, provide the full text of the original article, so that both extraction and analysis can be completed independently. Second, re-run Stage-1 and confirm the input is non-empty. Third, provide at minimum a list of information points, even at a coarse level. Any of these would allow the report to be prepared.
In the meantime, the report has not been published as 'news'. The material prepared states transparently what is known and what is unavailable. For readers and the editorial team, this is the most useful and most honest status report: when facts are absent, it is appropriate to acknowledge the gap rather than invent a story.
